Malaysians to get Porn Filters

malaysia-porn-filtering

The Malaysian Government is looking into implementing a filtering system to prevent Malaysian kids from being exposed to porn.

Something similar to China’s Green Dam project under a directive that took place early last month, the Malaysian Government has confirmed that they’ve tendered for an Internet filtering system for pornography.

There are tons of parent filtering software available out there, some even free, why would the Malaysian Government spent millions on such “porn filtering” project? Plus we also lack a proper sex education at school, isn’t this more important and cheaper than taking aggressive measure by filtering porn from kids? Unless there is some other “porn” that the Government plans to stop Malaysians from accessing it on the Internet.

We wonder what will be considered porn and how far will the Government filter the internet?

Here’s some official story here, here & here.

  1. Will this be similar to what Singapore did for some porn sites? (ban domain names) Or is it wider in scope?

This sounds like a waste of money to me, just because the task seems too difficult. If kids want to access porn, I’m sure they will find a way regardless of what the government does. In any case, I this this is an issue that should be handled by parents and not the government.

The US Government’s effort to bail out major mega corporations from sinking is laudable. The corporate heads should show an equal measure of understanding of the situation and a resolve to fight the crisis.
