Come next week, owners of Microsoft Corp’s portable music player Zune will be able to download music wirelessly and tag and buy songs they hear on the device’s built-in FM radio, Microsoft said on Monday.

Starting Wednesday, users with pirated copies of Microsoft Corp’s Windows XP Professional operating system (OS) on machines that are Internet-capable could find their computer displays going black and with no screen icons visible.
There are 8.6 million users of Win XP Pro in Malaysia and about three million are expected to suffer the “blackouts,” according to Microsoft Malaysia.
To continue working, the user would need to reset the machine’s desktop background. Everything will return to normal. But when 60 minutes are up, the black screen will reappear and the user must go through the whole process again.

Microsoft Corp.’s new digital photo sharing site spent most of its first day offline as its servers strained to handle a flood of traffic.
The site, called Photosynth, stitches together a set of related digital photos into a presentation that allows viewers to zoom and pan across the scene.
Microsoft employees and partners including National Geographic had been tinkering with a private beta version of the technology. Microsoft was set to open Photosynth to the public late Wednesday, but on Thursday morning the working site had already been replaced by a page that displayed an apology.

Carl C. Icahn, the activist investor, has a powerful new ally in his campaign to take control of Yahoo: Microsoft.
In yet another twist in its five-month-old pursuit of Yahoo, Microsoft said Monday that it would be interested in negotiating a purchase of Yahoo’s search business or of the entire company, as long as Yahoo replaces its board.
