Now you can watch over 25 local and international channels free on you PC.

Introducing Yoonic, a broadband based TV service. Users can now watch a wide range of channels for free including FashionTV, RTM1 and RTM2, also programmes like Korean serials such as One Fine Day, Sweet Spy and Sad Love Story, and local shows such as Islam Nusantara and Kota Warisan.

Other contents like CNN, Bloomberg and CNBC are currently being negotiated to make it available on Yoonic.

Currently, there are over 1,000 subscribers and growing. Yoonic is free for now.

To start using it, register for the service here- http://www.yoonic.tv/register.html

PC Requirements:

.Net Framework 2.0 or above

Windows Media Player 9 or above

Latest Adobe Flash Player

Internet Explorer 6.0 and above

I believe that the channels are being broadcasted from Yoonic’s server in Glenmarie, Shah Alam. I have tested the streaming with Streamyx 384Kbps and some channels works fine while most of it don’t. Yoonic’s recommended streaming speed is at 1Mbps and I do not recommend streaming Yoonic using wireless 3G since this application requires smooth streaming.

In future, Yoonic plans to charge a small access fee to users who wish the use service however there will not be any charges to view the contents. In other words, you pay a small fee and get to access all the channels.

Yoonic is a product of SyQic Capital Sdn Bhd. Based in Malaysia, one of its owner include Jamal Hassim who is the founder, managing director of Channel 9.

Users of peer-to-peer platforms, also known as P2P networks, may be under attack from entertainment lawyers policing copyright violations, but they can also be an easy target for identity thieves. And they may never know about it if it’s their kids who load the software.

Take the Olsons, a typical Indiana family: Christopher and Tami have three daughters, as well as a family dog.

The dog’s name can’t yet be found online, but everyone else’s can, thanks to security holes in popular P2P music downloading software. So can their birthdates and the family’s income and banking information.

“Unbelievable … how did it get out there?” asked Tami Olson, who pays bills and does her taxes online.

The Olsons’ private data were found through LimeWire, a software program used to download music and videos. Within a matter of minutes, two of the Olsons’ tax returns were available.

“Well, this is our entire tax history. It’s going to have, I imagine, the Social Security number of my husband, myself and our three children right there,” Tami Olson said.

She was right. In addition to the family’s income, the data included banking and routing numbers.

With the expansion of broadband service making it easier to share large media files, more than 60 million Americans have downloaded and used P2P services like LimeWire and Kazaa, according to the Federal Trade Commission and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital-rights group.

The Olsons’ oldest daughter unknowingly exposed the family’s personal and financial records after downloading LimeWire. “She didn’t really think there was anything wrong with that,” her mother said. “I told them to get it off immediately because I have a lot of personal info out there.”

Total exposure
Many users don’t realize that when they use file-sharing software, they are putting their hard drives on the network, to be shared with anyone else using the network.

Users can specify what files are private, but many don’t, said Eugene Spafford, a computer science professor at Purdue University and executive director of the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security.

“One problem with peer-to-peer is getting the settings wrong and sharing your entire disk or your entire personal file system, rather than simply the files you think you’re sharing,” Spafford said.

“We’ve created a culture and an expectation that you just install the software and you never bother to read that license that comes up or the warnings that come up,” he said.

Spafford said the Olsons’ story was not unique.

“Parents don’t understand the technology well enough to talk to their kids,” he said. -NBC News

In November, MySpace will add the Skype features and brand to its instant-messenger software, which allows MySpace users to conduct text chats with each other. MySpace users who download the newest version of that software will also be able to make free calls from their computers to each other, and to anyone else on the Skype network.

“We are interconnecting the world’s largest voice network and the world’s largest video and social network,” said Michael van Swaaij, interim chief executive of Skype. “It feels like an obvious fit.”

The companies hope that the combination will accelerate the growth of two already robust online networks. MySpace has 110 million active users around the world, but its members are mostly concentrated in the United States. Skype has 220 million users, most of them outside of this country. There is little overlap, particularly in the United States, where, according to Nielsen NetRatings, only 6.7 percent of Skype users are also users of MySpace’s instant-messenger software.

The two companies say they will split the revenue when MySpace members use Skype’s pay features, like voice mail boxes and calling to and from Skype accounts and regular landlines and mobile phones. They have not disclosed the exact ratio of that split.

The deal could be beneficial to both companies. MySpace’s instant- messenger software, used by about 25 million people, trails rival services from AOL, Yahoo and Microsoft in popularity and features. Those services already let people make voice calls in addition to conducting text chats. MySpace says the Skype deal helps it catch up.

The partnership gives Skype increased exposure at a difficult time. EBay recently acknowledged that it overpaid by more than a billion dollars in its $3.1 billion acquisition of Skype in 2005.-New York Times
