Kindle isn’t just for Kindle readers anymore. Amazon has already released a Kindle app for the iPhone, and at the Windows 7 launch event Thursday, the online retailer announced that Kindle software for Windows 7 (as well as Vista and XP) will be released in the next month — and a version for Mac will soon follow.

“Customers have told us that they want access to a wider variety of content and an increasingly diverse set of form factors,” said Mike Nash, corporate vice president of Windows Platform Strategy. “With the announcement of Kindle for PC, Amazon is making its massive selection of Kindle books available on the world’s most widely used platform.”

Amazon promoted the development as both a companion for current Kindle readers and a gateway for new customers. With the ability to sell e-books without having to sell a $259 reading device, Amazon can massively increase market penetration of the Kindle format.

In a recent unpredicted move, Microsoft, the world largest software maker said that it will give Europeans a choice on web browser for new computers running Windows Seven, the company’s latest upcoming operating system.

The European Commission has so far slapped fines totalling €1.68 billion ($2.9 billion) on the US software giant for infringing EU antitrust rules.

The company said users will have the option to download third party browsers that could possibly include Firefox, Opera, and Google’s Chrome browser.

However it is unclear if other parts of the world will be given similar option when Microsoft ships the new Windows Seven expected to be available by the end of the year.

Dr.Web, the anti virus software company from Russia has made available a beta version of its Antivirus software for Windows Seven, the upcoming operating system from Microsoft.

Full Press Release:

Dr.Web for Windows (beta) supports Windows 7

The Russian anti-virus vendor Doctor Web launches beta-testing of Dr.Web Security Space compatible with Windows 7 RC. This single-user anti-virus product provides a comprehensive solution to the problem of viruses and spam.

In the face of the upcoming release of Windows 7 that recently hit the RC milestone Doctor Web releases a beta-version of its Dr.Web Security Space compatible with the new OS from Microsoft.

Dr.Web Security Space incorporates all components required to provide reliable multi-level anti-virus security. This application detects and neutralizes rootkits and quickly scans files compressed with various archivers and packers. The improved heuristic analyzer and using Origins Tracing technology enable it to detect unknown threats.

Besides Dr.Web Security Space also scans HTTP-traffic and blocks access to infected web-pages and fraudulent web-sites. The parental control will help shield your children from contacts with cyber-criminals and will block access to unwanted web-resources.

Doctor Web welcomes all users willing to participate in the public beta-testing of Dr.Web Security Space for Windows 7 RC. You need to register to take part in the testing.

Microsoft has released the beta version of its Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, a free utility that tells you if your PC is ready to run Windows 7. It scans your computer, checking internal components, external peripherals, and programs, and alerts you to potential compatibility issues. It also offers upgrade suggestions, such as which drivers to replace, should you make the move to Windows 7.

It’s a good idea to run Upgrade Advisor, which takes only a few minutes, if you plan to install Windows 7 Release Candidate, which is also available as a free download. (The RC expires August 1, 2010.)

After downloading and installing Upgrade Advisor, you’ll see an opening screen that advises you to connect all of your external devices, such as hard drives, cameras, MP3 players, and so on:

Is Your PC Ready for Windows 7? This Tool Lets You Know

I ran the Upgrade Advisor on a 2-year-old Gateway MX8734 notebook that with a 1.6GHz Intel Pentium T2060 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive. This system runs Vista sluggishly-no surprise given the 1 gig of memory-and based on initial reports from Redmond, I thought it might perform better with Windows 7. However, a recent PC World Test Center report says that may not be the case.

The compatibility check took about 6 minutes and found a few potential issues. While the Gateway’s processor, memory, and hard drive met Windows 7′s minimum requirements (I expected this), Upgrade Advisor recommended that I download the latest driver for the Realtek Wireless 802.11b/g USB 2.0 network adapter before installing Win 7. It didn’t find potential conflicts with any installed programs.

Upgrade Advisor also pointed out that Windows 7 doesn’t include Web filtering (Windows Mail and Parental Controls), and it included a link to Microsoft’s Windows Live Essentials site, where you can download the free Family Safety utility.

Upgrade Advisor runs on Windows Vista and Windows XP Service Pack 2.-PC World

Chip vendors Qualcomm and Nvidia have thrown their support behind the Windows 7 OS for netbooks, announcing efforts to bring better graphics and continuous 3G connectivity to the devices.

Qualcomm on Wednesday announced it was sampling chips that enable Windows 7 netbook connectivity to multiple 3G networks. Separately, Nvidia announced beta drivers for its netbook platform that could bring full high-definition video to Windows 7.

Qualcomm said it had updated its Gobi2000 3G embedded chip, designed to let netbooks and laptops access multiple 3G networks like HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) or EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized). The chip supports Windows 7 and improves data speeds and frequencies at which devices can connect to 3G networks.

The module is in sampling and should reach netbooks and laptops in the second half of this year, Qualcomm said.

“We believe Gobi notebook and netbook customers will experience the long-sought desire for ubiquitous connectivity,” said Gary

Greenbaum, director of business development for Windows Networking at Microsoft, in a statement.

Separately, graphics vendor Nvidia on Wednesday said it has released beta drivers that make its Ion netbook platform compatible with Windows 7. Nvidia’s release of beta drivers could bring full high-definition 1080p video capabilities to Windows 7. It could also enable better multimedia capabilities, like photo editing and gaming, than what is usually found on netbooks.

“We have released beta drivers for Windows 7 to our customers for them to begin design/development of Ion-based systems now,” said Ken Brown, an Nvidia spokesman, in an e-mail.

Nvidia and Microsoft demonstrated several applications running on the Ion netbook with Windows 7 at an event in Taiwan on Wednesday. The officials showed 1080p high-definition video while simultaneously transcoding another HD video clip.

Nvidia did not comment on specifics related to the driver. Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Graphics vendor Nvidia is trying to get a piece of the emerging netbook market with Ion. No Ion-based netbooks are available yet, but Nvidia says it is working with PC makers to bring “mini-notebooks” to users at prices as low as US$299.

By extending Windows 7 drivers early, Nvidia is trying to entice PC makers to adopt the Ion platform over rivals like Intel, said Jon Peddie, president of market research firm Jon Peddie Research. The company’s early jump in extending drivers is also showing its seriousness in entering the netbook space.

The Ion platform pairs Nvidia’s GeForce 9400M GPU with Intel’s Atom CPU. Nvidia claims Ion gives better graphics to netbooks while drawing less power. That benefits netbook buyers who get more powerful graphics at a lower price, Peddie said.

However, Intel officials argue the battery life and small-form factor of netbooks are not designed to run high-definition movies, which are better suited for mainstream laptops. Intel recently started shipping the Atom N280 processor and GN40 chipset that can decode 720p video.

Using Intel’s netbook processor, the Ion platform can make a puny netbook into an “honest-to-god notebook,” Peddie said.-PC World
